Opening Letter for 2012 Season

Dear Parents and Players,

It’s December and with the holidays bearing down on us it means Lacrosse season is right around the the corner and we need to start planning.  I am excited to announce and share some of the revisions and improvements we will make and introduce this year.   Monroe Lacrosse has been extremely successful the short time it has been in existence.   We need two things to keep up the quality standards of our program – 1)volunteer help from parents with coaching, administrative and fundraising  2) keep making changes to make the program better

The first change is that we will introduce a new aspect to our program.  We will hold clinics for first and second graders for five weeks at midday at the high school on the following Sundays-April 15, 22, 29, May 6, 20.  This will give the kids an opportunity to be exposed to the sport and learn the skills. Price will be $40. There will be separate boys and girls clinics at the same time.

The second change is that we will drastically lower the price of registration for 3rd – 4th graders to $75 (additional $25 for mandatory US Lacrosse fee).  We are also undergoing an effort to come up with as much equipment as we can so that the program can outfit the players.  These two changes will encourage boys to try the sport and minimize the initial investment for equipment. More on the equipment drive later.

We will move the start of the season back two weeks to Sat March 17 so we are spending more time in warmer weather. The season will end on Sunday June 10th with a late afternoon picnic at Thomson Park.  I have not finalized the schedule but there will be no games on Sundays except for the 7th and 8th grade participation in the Hillsborough tournament on May 6th.  There will be no games the weekend of Passover/Easter (April 7-8), we will schedule some games on April 14th assuming some kids will be on vacation and we will not have a full roster.

We will have some Box Lacrosse at the Rec Center Rink.  For 3rd-5th graders the dates will be Saturday March 3 and Saturday March 10.  The 6th -8th graders will have four days – Feb 18 and 25, March 3 and 10.   3rd-5th graders will go from 12-1, 6th-8th graders from 1-2.

Registration begins on our website beginning January 2, 2012.  The cost will be $75 for 3-4th graders, $150 for 5th-8th graders.  There is an additional charge of $25 for US Lacrosse which covers insurance, magazine subscription and is required to play in the tournaments.  We have team helmets with decals and team shorts which can be purchased at the time of registration, but the order must be in by Feb 20th.   Orders can be picked up at the Rec Center on March 15th from 7-8 PM.   All players must be registered in the system and all payments must be done through the system with a credit card – registration, helmets, shorts, apparel, Faceoff Dinner, and year end picnic.

A mandatory parent meeting has been scheduled for each team level—Grades 3-4 February 28; Grades 5-6 February 29; and Grades 7-8 March 1.  Each meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Rec Center where we will discuss coach and player expectations, parent involvement, and the new season schedule.   All coaches will be present. Jerseys will be given out on a seniority basis.  Monroe Lacrosse will be collecting $100.00 for a deposit for the two jerseys(will not be cashed but forced to do since too many have walked) and will be given back at the end of the season upon return of your jerseys—No Exceptions!   If one of your jerseys are not returned, your check will then be cashed.  We will not put aside any jersey for those not in attendance.
Lacrosse Apparel
In addition to registration on-line, we encourage you to purchase your lacrosse apparel when you register as it takes approximately four weeks to come in.  On-line purchase can be made up to February 20th.   We will arrange a night to pick up your apparel at the Rec Center from Jennifer Acquaviva, most probably March 15th.

Equipment Exchange
We will have an equipment exchange night on Thursday February 23rd  at 7pm at the Rec Center.   This will be an opportunity for those that have left the program or outgrown their equipment to either give or donate back to the program.  I am in the process of finalizing the process to become a 501-C3 organization so you will be able to legally claim your donation.
This will outfit the third and fourth graders and enable newcomers to overcome the equipment investment hurdle.

Face-off Dinner
We would like to continue the spirit of the Face-off Dinner to interact with the high school players and get a chance to catch up with the Lacrosse families and get pumped up for the first games of the year.  The dinner is scheduled for Friday, March 30, 2012 at 7:00 pm at the Middle School cafeteria.  We are planning a lighter fare than last year.  Tickets will be made available through the website only and will be $10 per person/$8 per player (subject to change).

Volunteers off the Field
As with any organization, volunteers are always needed.   Monroe Lacrosse prides itself for not asking for Work Bonds, but it is getting more difficult to get the help required to run more efficiently.  If you would like to volunteer as a team parent, assist with apparel orders, help with the Face-off Dinner, help with home game set up, and year-end picnic, please contact Jennifer Acquaviva  at .

Volunteers on the Field
We have been fortunate to have some talented, dedicated coaches over the years.  Yes it is hard and demanding and takes a commitment.  But it can be so rewarding. There is no lacrosse experience required.  If you have coached another sport, you are qualified to help out.  We welcome part time coaches, the guys whose schedule won’t let them be there every practice or game.   That will not be a problem.  We are especially interested in those parents who attend the practices, we would like to get you on the field and involved.
We will have a preseason coaches meeting at 7:30 on February 23rd at the Rec Center.  We have several new initiatives that I am very excited about.

We hope these changes will foster a more seamless start of the season by being better prepared and getting right into the game of Lacrosse.  If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact me. The 2012 season will be a special time to be part of Monroe Lacrosse
